Tips for Keeping Truck Drivers

Truck driver showing he is happy by giving a thumbs up

Usually, when a person leaves a job it’s because they can’t stand their boss or co-workers. It’s not often that it’s the actual job! It’s usually the people they have to deal with on a daily basis, and one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch.

Truck drivers are like any other employees– they want to be paid properly and treated well by the higher-ups.

What are some tips for keeping truck drivers?

Well, just like relationships, communication is key. Don’t hide things from your truckers. Listen to them when they express concerns. Adjust policies when you can in order to make them happy. Be open to ideas rather than ignoring or degrading them. If you, as a boss, support your truckers rather than oppose them, that can help. You are creating a culture whether you know it or not. Are you open or closed? Are you judgmental or kind? Are you friendly or a jerk? Treat truckers well and you’ll keep them– treat them like garbage and they’ll leave.

Being adaptable is perhaps one of the greatest things a person or company can be. Those who don’t adapt? Well, they “die.” You’ve got to keep up with people, culture, the times, etc. So, for example, a driver asks for time off. If you find a way to accommodate that, they’ll be happy; If you don’t, they’ll resent you and their job. Adapt and adjust as needed.

Provide truckers with equipment that works and help for when they’re struggling with a problem. Do what you can to make their jobs more comfortable. Write out what you expect and post it for all to read so everyone’s on the same page. Reward exemplary behavior and provide incentives for those who go above and beyond the norm.

Finally, think of the word “balance.” Truckers, like any other workers, need a balance between their home and work life. It can’t be all “work, work, work.” Have parties. Play games like basketball or pickleball together. Organize a couple nice dinners. Give away movie passes. Encourage gym memberships. Provide good health insurance. Make sure they take vacations.

If you appreciate truckers, they’ll stay with your company. Pay them well, reward them and show you care. It’s as easy as that. Are you in the market for reliable truck drivers? If so, find out how a truck driver placement agency like Platinum Drivers can help.
