Here’s How Truck Drivers Can Avoid Accidents

Driving a truck ain’t easy and it’s not for the faint of heart. You’ve got a big machine that you’re in control of, and one bad move could mean you or someone else dies. When you think of it that way, you realize truckers really do have to be on their game when behind the wheel, right?

What are some practical things truck drivers can do to avoid accidents?

Proper Rest

For starters, rest up and don’t drive drowsy. You’d be surprised how many drivers get on the road even when they’re tired to the point of exhaustion. Falling asleep at the wheel can kill people. Therefore, follow the rules about driving hours and make sure to get enough sleep so you’re fresh for the road. Take breaks as needed.

Clear Mind

Next, and this should be obvious, is a quick mention of drinking and drugs– if you’re under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or other certain substances, realize that those things can impair your ability to drive like a normal driver. Therefore, don’t drive under the influence.

Following the Rules of the World

Most people love to go over the speed limit. Some truck drivers do, too, but that’s what can end up causing accidents. So, drive at a legal speed.

Proper Planning

Do some planning before you hit the road so you have a general idea of where you’re going. The better you know your route ahead of time, the less likely you are going to cause an accident since you know where you’re going. The worst is when you’re lost because that’s when it’s easy to make mistakes or make dumb moves on the road.

Road Awareness

Blind spots are to be checked because you are big and those around you are generally small. When you change lanes, you could easily cause an accident. If you don’t check your blind spots then you have no idea if there are vehicles near you that you could be hitting while changing lanes.

Finally, stay focused. This means you’ve got to keep your eyes on the road, know what’s going on around you and your truck and don’t get sidetracked with a phone call, a talk show on the radio or something else that causes you to lose focus of your job.

Truck drivers need to drive safely and arrive alive. All truckers should care about avoiding accidents.
