Searching for a job can be frustrating. We know, understatement of the year, right?
It’s never been more true than it is today, and it applies to almost every trade or industry across the planet. One of the worst obstacles to employment is the paradox of working experience. Every job in the classified section seems to require experience, yet none of them offer a chance to acquire it.
To every problem, there is a solution—or in this case, at least a semblance of one. Here are a few ways to get that ever elusive truck driving experience.
Go The Extra Mile In The Application Process
Part of the reason why so many companies may require driving experience is because jobs are in high demand. For that reason, you should treat every opening like it’s your last chance. Show them how much you want it. Fill out every section of the application in detail. Do some research before interviews, and find a way to convince the interviewer that you are the perfect fit for their company, no matter how much experience you have. If you can show that you’re a hard worker with a great attitude, the right trucking company might just see the value in giving you an opportunity to learn on the job.
Be Flexible
The trucking industry is like any other. You’ll need to pay your dues and work your way up to the job that you want. To get your foot in the door, you’ll probably need to do some things you don’t want to do. Think of it as an exercise in delayed gratification. If you’re willing to work tough hours and undesirable routes, you may have the chance to build experience to get the job you want a little further into the future.
Just because you have a CDL license doesn’t necessarily mean you’re done with your education. In fact, holding a CDL license makes you a pretty small fish in a pretty big pond. See if you can find other ways to learn job-related skills. Showing a willingness to learn will make you look better for potential employers and give you a better chance at succeeding when you do land a job.
